Budget, Book Bans & Boosting the Economy | Q+A
This week on Q+A ... Ahead of the federal budget we get, a debate on the federal budget we want.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers faces global instability, rising debt, mounting welfare bills, stubborn inflation and a financially stressed electorate that could throw out the government within a year. Former Treasury boss Ken Henry warns we’re on a “knife edge” and squibbing critical economic reform.
So what should be in the books on Tuesday? What are the spending priorities and where’s the fat to pay for them? What would a fairer, more sustainable tax system look like? How do we seize new opportunities and rebuild the economy to deliver better services, higher productivity and future wealth?

      Because low income Australians are yet to band together and demand a better deal. The shearers did back in the 1950s. Unless you're at the table, then you're on the menu. Sad, I know. But true.

    If there is one indisputable piece of evidence that Australia is a plutocracy, it's the failure to properly tax our natural resources. There are simply no words to describe how irresponsible this is. And it's both major parties that have allowed this to happen (noting that Labor did try to introduce a super profits tax then buckled under a relentless media campaign by the resource sector through the Murdoch press). Until we get rid of political donations, Australia has no long term future. Moreover, if Australians continue to believe in corporate funded campaigns, then we deserve nothing less than to suffer for our collective cowardice.

    If an average Australian working an average fulltime job can't afford to live in Australia today, how will they afford to live here tomorrow or anytime in the future? Same sex divorce rates increased 867% in just four years since the first year of legalisation. What would you like our children to learn about this? Problems in the middle east and anywhere in the world are just that and should be left there, they defiantly have no place in Australia. If you have no interest in being Australian, renounce your citizenship and leave. We are tired of the 3rd world bringing their problems into our neighborhoods in Australia.

    A sovereign wealth fund is an excellent idea. But they're right that the demand needs to come from the electorate. Also right that the mining sector will absolutely do anything it can to sabotage anything that affects their profits, regardless of whether or not it is best for the country.

    Yeah, nah. Nuclear doesn't make sense for Australia. We have plenty of space and excellent seasonal consistency for renewables. Geographic diversity also helps a lot. Nuclear is also expensive and will take at least a decade before we could activate a single reactor. By that time our grid will be almost all renewables anyway.

    • @paddles2933
      @paddles2933 10 часов назад

      The problem with renewables is you need a massive over supply to be able to maintain energy demands when there is no sun or the winds don't blow in areas... When there is an over supply generators will be earning $0.... who is going to invest in building wind farms and solar farms that won't be earning money. If you don't understand that then you don't understand the need for baseload electricity generation. Please don't say batteries as the night time energy demand is 25GWH how many batteries do you want???

    • @zen1647
      @zen1647 9 часов назад

      @paddles2933 Easy. If 2.5% of cars were EV with V2G and 50kWh battery it's completely covered. Also 6 GWh of already installed batteries, and more to come. Also 250 GWh pumped hydro planned for Snowy 2.0, and 140 GWh possible in Tasmania. Also, did you know the wind still blows at night? The concept of baseload demand is already outdated - the wholesale price already goes negative most days. Expensive and slow Nuclear is the last thing Australia needs.

    I propose that if content on SM is restricted to "journalistic standards" - then it loses its power as an alternative to the media, (State-controlled to varying degrees). I am very concerned that the PM has been quite blatant in his opinion that, (presumably all) content should be aligned with, (his conception of) "Australian Family Values". This threatens to infantilize and disempower us all. He has taken the opportunity to make declarations about very unfortunate events and episodes lately that make it clear he believes the solutions can only lie in further social engineering. I get the creepy feeling that he is apparently convinced that without necessary shielding from itself, Australian society simply can't deal with the world as it is.
